Warren Wolf & the History of the Vibraphone

Vibraphonist Warren Wolf, who is no stranger to our guests, having sailed in the past on The Jazz Cruise as a member of the SFJAZZ Collective and Christian McBride’s Inside Straight, will present his “History of the Vibraphone “project that features music from many of his heroes on that instrument.  Warren told us that he created the show because he wanted to inform more people about the uniqueness of the vibraphone. “Most people outside of jazz only know of two people who play the instrument and that’s Lionel Hampton and Roy Ayers,” Warren explained. “The entire project is to let listeners hear about some of my personal favorites who have performed on the instrument and hearing how the sounds of the instrument have changed over the years.”

Among the vibraphonists featured in the program, beyond Hampton and Ayers, are Terry Gibbs, Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Cal Tjader, Gary Burton, Dave Samuels and Joe Locke. Warren chose players who had a profound impact on his career. “I’ve always been a fan of listening to multiple styles of music,” Warren said. “When choosing this material, I wanted to take listeners on a journey to hear how Terry Gibbs would swing and have people dancing, to the modern playing of Gary Burton, to hearing the R&B sounds of Roy Ayers. I wanted to give the listeners a true history lesson to hear the different sounds of each musician.”

Warren will perform with an all-star quintet.
