Welcome to Sterling Vineyards. The winery itself is an architectural icon in Napa Valley, perched 300 feet above the historic town of Calistoga. Modeled after the beautiful white stucco buildings on the Greek island of Mykonos, it stands out dramatically against the rugged Mayacamas and Vaca Mountain ranges that flank each side of Napa Valley. We have reserved the newly redesigned St. Dunstan Room for your premier tasting experience of Sterling’s premier wines, a selection of their Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

    About Sterling Vineyards

Sterling Vineyards was founded in 1964 by Oxford graduate and successful businessman Peter Newton. As one of only 27 bonded wineries in Napa Valley at the time, Sterling Vineyards was an early pioneer of crafting Bordeaux-inspired red wines in California and helped transform the region into the premier winemaking appellation we know today. In 1969, Sterling Vineyards bottled the first vintage-dated Merlot in California. This was also the winery’s first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.

    Domaine Carneros

    Tasting event: 11:00am – 12:30pm

Departing San Francisco, we venture into the Los Carneros appellation composed of a series of low rolling hills that sit above San Pablo Bay and beneath Mount Veeder. Because of the clay dominant soils, the cooling influence of the Bay, regular fog and ocean breezes from the Pacific through the Petaluma wind gap, the region is ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines.

Domaine Carneros is a singular Napa Valley winery best known as a small grower-producer of méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine, estate vineyards and a breathtakingly beautiful Château.  In the spacious and opulent private tasting room, you will discover the Art of Sparkling Wine Pairing that will take you on a journey of discovery through unexpected and delightful pairings with sparkling wine.

This Food & Wine Pairing experience will include savory bites, each of which has been specially designed to pair with a selection of Carneros sparkling wines – Ultra Brut, Estate Brut Cuvée, Brut Rosé and Verméil Demi-Sec. Led by seasoned wine educators, this experience will open your eyes to a new side of sparkling wine.

    About Domaine Carneros

Founded by the noble family behind Champagne Taittinger, Domaine Carneros was established in 1987. Domaine Carneros farms 6 ranches in the Carneros AVA, and all of them are within 4 miles of the Chateau. Our Estate Vineyards now total 400 acres, 250 acres devoted to Pinot Noir and 150 acres planted to Chardonnay.

    Etude Winery

Lunch with paired wines event: 1:00pm – 3:00pm

If you are a lover of Pinot Noir, this is the wine visit for you! Etude Estate’s Carneros Pinot Noir not only reflects the winery’s dedication to excellence, it is an exemplary showcase of the finesse and depth that the Carneros AVA can impart to this noble grape.  For this reason, connoisseurs and casual wine enthusiasts alike visit the Estate to discover the profound beauty and depth of Carneros Pinot Noir.

Weather permitting, your lunch experience will be hosted out in the newly built Plaza adjacent to the tasting room and lounges. This experience will include a three-course lunch serving paired with a selection of Pinot Noirs & hearty Cabernet Sauvignons to provide you with a full edification of what makes Etude so distinct.

    About Etude Winery

Tucked away in the far northwest corner of the esteemed Carneros appellation is a rambling tract of grazing land that is bisected by the Rodgers Creek Fault Line at the southern toe of Sonoma Mountain. Unlike customary Carneros acreage, which is largely uplifted by bottoms with soils composed of clay, the soils on the Etude Estate site are variations of volcanic origin. They are well drained, rocky upland soils. Combining these soils with the extreme western location closer to the Pacific Ocean makes this site a decidedly distinct destination (if not entirely atypical for Carneros). Etude believes sustainable farming results in better, higher quality wine, and ensures the viability of their estate for generations to come. Known for their flagship Heirloom Pinot Noir to their small-lot Napa Valley Cabernet and customer favorite Pinot Gris, Etude has been crafting award-winning wines for 35 years.

This wine tour is exclusively reserved for Sonoma wineries. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and Napa Valley, Sonoma County is blessed with a versatile landscape which is strongly impacted by maritime influences. The cooler climate is conducive to growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and cool-climate Syrah. Most vineyards in Sonoma are above the fog line so they don’t lose the warmth required to enable grapes to ripen in time for harvest.

When you hear the name Kendall-Jackson, one immediately thinks of Chardonnay!

The late Jess Jackson, visionary winemaker and founder of Kendall-Jackson, was noted for popularizing Chardonnay with his Kendall-Jackson Winery.

Your visit to Kendall-Jackson will take you on a tour of the winery to learn of its unique pioneering history, a wander through their lush sensory gardens, while tasting the fruits of their labor by way of an informal tasting that will take you through Kendall-Jackson’s world class selection of limited-release, coastal California wines.

    About Kendall-Jackson

Purchasing 80-acre apple and walnut orchard in 1982 and replanting Chardonnay grapevines, they set about making a premium yet affordable Californian Wine. Jess sold the first case ever of Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay at the Oyster Bar at Grand Central Station. That same year, the inaugural vintage of Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay won the first-ever Platinum Award for an American Chardonnay at The American Wine Competition.

Kendall-Jackson was officially on the map.

    Gloria Ferrer Wine Estate

    Tasting event: 10:30am – 12:30pm

Welcome to the Sonoma side of Carneros, where grape growing is also defined by maritime influences of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. These bodies of water and corresponding currents create cool summer temperatures and moderate winters. A long growing season coaxes the grapes to maturity slowly and consistently with a desirable balance of sugar and acidity – the perfect setting for the craft of sparkling wine.

Enter Gloria Ferrer, the first sparkling winery in Carneros.

With a designated private tasting space, a level down from the hilltop winery and closer to the vineyards, Gloria Ferrer will delight your taste buds with a flight of four individual estate vintage sparkling wines. Shareable bites are also available for purchase.

    About Gloria Ferrer Wine Estate

José Ferrer championed his family’s dream of producing exceptional traditional method sparkling wine in the New World. In the 1980s, he ventured from Barcelona, Spain to Sonoma, California with his wife Gloria in search of the ultimate region to make sparkling wine. They settled upon Carneros. For the Ferrers, whose Spanish sparkling winegrowing experience goes back generations, the potential of Los Carneros was unmistakable, even before it became an established AVA. They recognized the ideal climate for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — and thus the perfect terroir for brilliant sparkling wines. Known for: Pinot Noir dominant sparkling wines

    About Anaba

At the heart of Anaba Wines lies the extraordinary journey of John Sweazey, the driving force behind this family-owned winery. John’s path to creating a world-class wine estate spans four decades and stands as a testament to his diverse experiences and unyielding dedication. Hailing from suburban Park Ridge, IL, John’s trajectory took him from studying business at Stanford University to venturing into computer sales and embarking on a transformative European exploration in a VW van. This adventure ignited his passion for wine and planted the seeds for what Anaba Wines would eventually become. The name, Anaba, is derived from the anabatic winds that flow through the vineyards that drive morning fog from the vineyards and bring in cooling breezes in the late afternoon.

Known for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rhone-style wines made from grapes grown on Anaba’s estate in Carneros, as well as from grapes grown by their long-standing Sonoma wine grower partners.

A FOODIES’ GUIDE TO SAN FRANCISCOFOODIES’ CHOICES Form

Bon Appétit declared San Francisco to be the best food city in the country, and who could argue with that? After all, there’s more to this place than the Golden Gate Bridge and cable cars. Of course, you may already know it’s famous for sourdough bread, but do you know what else you can find while you’re here? Countless restaurants serve fresh seafood, from Dungeness crab to bay shrimp, but you can also indulge in sweet treats and desserts like millionaire bacon and mouthwatering French toast (here’s looking at you, sourdough). There’s no shortage of coffee, either. And let’s be honest — you’ll want to stay caffeinated to keep up with the pace of this town.

And no one knows the San Francisco food scene better than Michael Bauer!  For 32 years, Michael was the Food Critic for the San Francisco Chronicle.  When he retired in 2018, his tenure was heralded as one of the longest ever for a food critic.  For a profession that relies upon anonymity, Michael’s run required ingenious deception.

He used at least 100 different names, countless credit cards, and when necessary, disguises.  He even attended a CIA conference on how not to be recognized.

Michael worked with us years ago when we toured the Mediterranean Sea on our Signature Jazz Cruise program.  Insightful and delightful, we are thrilled that he is willing to join us in San Francisco for a culinary tour of the City by the Bay.

Journey of Jazz docks in San Francisco at 7 am on Tuesday, September 16 and departs at 6 pm on Wednesday, September 17.  We have asked Michael to make recommendations for each of the dining segments while we are in San Francisco.

Michael suggested the following restaurants for our guests to consider.  In each case, proximity to the ship was a significant factor in the selection process.  For those who are interested in this experience, we ask you to send your preferences to us by completing the FOODIES’ CHOICES Form.

Once we receive your preferences Michael Bauer will proceed to develop menus, pricing, and dining times.  Your preferences are not obligations, but, instead, will serve us in our preparation.

As soon as the menus, pricing, and dining times are finalized, you will be notified at which you may complete a reservation.

(*) Michael Bauer will host one of the dining experiences in this segment.

(**) Depending upon your dining selection, dinner that night may conflict with the timing of the onboard entertainment, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.  Guests who select a dinner option will attend the 5:30 pm show that night and will be at their dinner selection no later than 8:00 pm.

We have asked each restaurant to provide a Fixed Menu for the diners, with a meat/fowl/fish/vegetarian entrée selection.  We will provide the menus (with pricing) shortly.  In some instances a glass of wine is included, but, in most cases, all alcoholic beverages are a la carte.
